Here is an example of the same automatic bodily reaction to a perceived threat: stand outside on a cold day, and before long, you will start to shiver; and your teeth might even begin to chatter. You aren’t doing that on purpose, yet you can’t help it; and you can’t stop it. That is your body trying to protect itself from freezing, just as it will try to protect itself from starving; whether you want it to or not.
